This and that and Heerlen

This week I joined the Jelly Roll Sampler Quilt I told you about in my last post. It was lots of fun to make this block and for the first time I have cut into a jelly roll. It wasn't that bad.

Deze week ben ik begonnen met de Jelly Roll Sampler Quilt. Erg leuk om te doen. Het is de eerste keer dat ik in een jelly roll gesneden heb. Het viel gelukkig mee.

Quite a few of you asked me about the Jelly Roll Ruler. This ruler had the clear width of a jelly roll, honey bun and half a cake layer. So you don't have to search for the inches. It is clearly marked on the ruler. Very easy. I loved to use it for my jelly roll and it will be easy to work with it on my cake layers! You can get it here.

Een paar mensen hebben mij naar de Jelly Roll Ruler gevraagd. Deze liniaal geeft duidelijk de breedte aan van een jelly roll, honey bun en de helft van een cake layer. Zo hoef je nooit op zoek te gaan. Heel handig en heel duidelijk. Hier kun je het krijgen.

I made these blocks for Quilts For Hearts, that Robyn mentioned on her blog . If I have more time, I will make some more.

Deze twee blokken heb ik voor Quilts For Hearts gemaakt. Robyn had dit op haar blog staan. Wanneer ik weer eens tijd heb, zal ik er zeker nog een paar maken.

I made three more pillowcases for the project I described here. I decided to make some more, because the shipping costs have become even higher since this year. It is worth more to send 8 pillowcases for the money, than only 5. And that way I hope to make 3 more children happy!

Ik heb nog 3 kussenslopen gemaakt voor het project dat ik hier heb omschreven. Ik heb er nog een paar bijgemaakt omdat de verzendkosten buiten Europa weer eens aardig gestegen zijn. Zo kan ik hopelijk nog eens 3 kinderen blij maken.

On Friday Jos came over to fetch the first 'international' Dromenquilt (O: I called it 'wereldreis' - world trip and on the little card I mentioned where all the blocks came from.

Op vrijdag is Jos de 'internationale' Dromenquilt komen halen (O: Ik heb de quilt 'wereldreis' genoemd en op het kaartje staat waar alle blokken vandaan komen.

Each morning Bibi and I take our early morning walk (O: It's so good to have her, because alone I don't think I would do it.

Iedere ochtend neemt Bibi mij mee voor de ochtendwandeling (O: Zonder haar zou ik nooit iedere ochtend gaan wandelen.

I have lived in Heerlen since 1978. It has never been my favorite city to live in. Lots of problems here and many characteristical old buildings have been broken down.

But, now I have decided to look at Heerlen in a different way. To see the beautiful side of it.

This week I came across these trees when Bibi and I took our walk. Look at all the mistletoe!

Sinds 1978 woon ik in Heerlen. Het is nooit mijn stad geworden. Veel problemen en veel mooie oude gebouwen worden afgebroken.

Ik heb besloten om Heerlen eens met andere ogen te gaan bekijken. Kijk eens naar de bomen die ik tegenkwam tijdens een van mijn wandelingen. De maretak groeit heel veel hier.

Als je goed kijkt, of op de foto klikt, kun je een schaap zien naast een omgewaaide fruitboom. De boom, die volgegroeid was met maretak, is tijdens de storm van afgelopen zondag omgewaaid.

During my walks, I regularly come across old homes. Look at the lovely doors.

Tijdens mijn wandelingen kom ik regelmatig langs oude woningen. Kijk eens naar de prachtige deuren.

Hier is de deur omringd door glas-en-lood.

Laura was finally home again, after 4 weeks. Look who else is happy (O: As soon as Laura sits down somewhere, Bibi joins her. They have had this ever since we had Bibi as a pup. Laura used to 'use' her as a pillow when she was reading. Bibi only does this with Laura!

Na vier weken is Laura eindelijk weer thuis. Kijk eens wie er nog meer blij was (O: Zodra Laura ergens een lekker plekje gevonden heeft, gaat Bibi bij haar zitten. Dit doen ze al sinds wij Bibi als pup hebben. Vroeger gebruikte Laura Bibi als kussen terwijl ze aan het lezen was. Bibi doet dit allemaal alleen met Laura!

Charity quilt, pillowcases, sewing mat and strings

This week I finished the first of two charity quilts I started together with wonderful ladies from all over the world for Dromenquilts. Kathy at Pink Chalk Fabrics was so kind to donate the fabrics for the top, binding and backing for both quilts. Thank you so much Bev, Vikki, Lyn (Australia), Shiree (New Zealand), Stephanie, Laurie, Kathy (USA), Dolores (Canada), Melanie, Maria (England), Satu (Finland) and Gudrun (Iceland) for having helped me to make this wonderful quilt for children who will cherish them!

For the second quilt I am still waiting for blocks. The material from me got there very late. So I hope I will receive them fast, so I can start the second one.

Deze week heb ik de eerste van de twee Dromenquilts afgemaakt, die ik dankzij de hulp van quilters over de hele wereld heb kunnen maken. Kathy van Pink Chalk Fabrics heeft de stof voor de top, binding en achterkant van de quilts gedoneerd!

This week I also managed to make five pillowcases for children in the USA, which Jackie announced on her blog. Thanks to the turorial Gaby linked to on YouTube, I was able to make them very easily. They were lots of fun to make. The red fabric of the one on the left is made from what was left over of the above charity quilt backing.

Deze week heb ik vijf kussenslopen gemaakt voor een goed doel in Amerika, waar Jackie op haar blog naar verwezen heeft. Dankzij de link die Gaby voor een tutorial op YouTube, was het heel gemakkelijk, deze te maken. De rode stof van de kussensloop links is gemaakt van een rest van de achterkant van de bovenste quilt.

This week I also made Marie-Jozé's sewing mat. She has a great pattern for it, which I was allowed to test (O: From the result, you can see that it is a a very good pattern! I found some lovely Debbie Mumm fabrics in my stash, which reminded me of Spring and Summer.

Deze week heb ik ook de naaimachinemat gemaakt met een zakje, volgens een patroon van Marie-Jozé. Het is een heel leuk patroon om te maken en ik mocht het van haar testen. Aan het resultaat kun je zien, dat het een goed patroon is! Ik heb in mijn stapel stofjes deze van Debbi Mumm gevonden. Ze doen me aan het voorjaar en de zomer denken.

Here are my prepatations for my string blocks. The fabrics are leftovers from a quilt I made for Laura and some I also used to finish a stitchery project. I joined Stephanie's Loft Creations No Strings Attached Challenge. It is my second project. I still have to sew the binding to my first one...

Meanwhile I finished 20 blocks.

Hier zijn mijn voorbereidingen voor mijn string blocks. De stofjes zijn van resten van een quilt die ik voor Laura heb gemaakt. Ik doe mee aan Stephanie's Loft Creations No Strings Attached Challenge. Het is mijn tweede project, maar de eerste is nog steeds niet af. Ik moet de binding er nog aannaaien...

Ondertussen heb ik 20 blokken af.

Some of the things that arrived this week. I finally found my favorite quilting thread, which I could no longer get at my local quiltshop. Luckily a webshop in the States had it! The package reached me within a week. Unbelievable, knowing that I am still waiting for three packages to arrive that were sent to me beginning January. The one that was sent to my in December finally arrived. I had to pay customer duties. Those are the chances you take when ordering outside Europe.

On the right you can also see a door eye. Jos at Cybele's Patch told me about it. You get a good overview over your whole quilt, so that you can see whether you placed your blocks right.

Hier wat aanwinsten van deze week. Ik heb eindelijk mijn lievelings doorzichtig doorquiltgaren gevonden! Ik was al heel zuinig met het enige klosje dat ik had en dat hier in Nederland niet meer bijbesteld kon worden. Gelukkig heb ik een webshop in Amerika kunnen vinden. En het pakketje was er binnen een week. Ongelooflijk. Ik wacht nog steeds op drie pakketjes, die begin januari verstuurd zijn )O: Gelukkig is het pakketje van december wel eindelijk binnen. Helaas moest ik er kosten over betalen, maar dat is het risico van het vak.

Ook zie je een deurkijker rechts. Jos van Cybele's Patch heeft me daarop attent gemaakt. Je gebruikt het om een algeheel overzicht van een top te krijgen en te zien of de blokken goed liggen.

Winter White Schnibbles, blocks and strings

This week I received 6 more blocks for the two charity quilts. the ones on the left are from Maria (UK), the middle ones from Laurie (USA) and the right ones are from Bev (Australia). This week I will be starting on the one with the red middle part. I have enough blocks now, including the extra ones I made. Thank you so much Maria, Laurie and Bev for helping making these quilts! It feels very special and I hope I can soon show a result!


Deze week heb ik nog zes blokken voor de twee charity quilts gekregen. De linkse blokken zijn van Maria (GB), de middelste twee van Laurie (VS) en de twee rechtse van Bev (Australië).
Deze week zal ik beginnen met het maken van de eerste top. Ook Maria, Laurie en Bev, bedankt voor jullie hulp! Het voelt heel bijzonder, deze quilt te maken maken!

I finished my fourth (already) Schnibbles just on time. This one is the Winter White. I am very satisfied with it and always think the last one is prettiest. So, right now, I think this one is the nicest I have made so far (O: This month I should have worked on the Madeline Schnibble, but once again the post didn't deliver things on time, so the charm packs I had ordered came in much too late. Since I hadn't made the first Schnibbles, I decided to make this one (O:

Ik heb mijn vierde Schnibbles klaar. Dit is Winter White. Ik ben erg tevreden met het resultaat. Eigenlijk zou deze maand Madeline Schnibbles gemaakt worden, maar de charm packs waren niet op tijd binnen, dus heb ik de eerst maar gemaakt, waarvoor ik eerder nog geen kan had.

Vergeet niet morgen op de blogs van Sherri en Sinta te kijken. Daar kun je de Schnibbles Parade bekijken. Er zijn altijd heel mooie quilts te zien!

And this table topper is made from the scraps and leftovers of Winter White. Five blocks are strings, made from the scraps of the blocks that had to be cut from 5" squares to 3.5" squares. This project is for the Loft Creations No Strings Attached Challenge. I will finish the bindings this week, so I can actually use it.

De table topper is gemaakt van de resten van Winter White. Vijf van de blokken zijn strings. Dit is een project voor de Loft Creations No Strings Attached Challenge. De binding zal ik deze week afmaken.

Here is my 5th Leanne's House block that I am making together with Jutta. Lots of stitchery. I put more balance in to this one with the fabrics, which I like more. It is a good one for the middle of a quilt. I can't suddenly change the way I worked with the fabrics.
The block was supposed to be finished in December, but Jutta and I agreed it would be better to have it finished by January. So, dear Jutta, now I am all ready to start with the 6th block! Really looking forward to it!

Hier is dan eindelijk mijn 5e blok voor Leannes House, die ik samen met Jutta maak. Heel veel stitchery. In deze blok heb ik meer evenwicht in de stofjes gezocht. Zo bevalt het me beter. het is de middelste blok, dus kan het ook. Maar ik denk dat ik de rest van de blokken weer op de oude manier maak, anders klopt het niet. Nu op naar de zesde blok, die we eind deze maand af willen hebben.



I have had the Gail Pan's Christmas Elves at home for a while already. Melanie, Suzie and I will be making this stitchery quilt together. Each of the nine blocks should be finished by the 2nd of the month. so, this one is all ready to be finished by then. I will post it next Sunday! I know that having these challenges with dear blogging friends, actually makes me finish quilts!

Dromenquilts and more

Yesterday 20 ladies came together to work for Jopie's Dromenquilts. The day was organized by Marie-Jozé, who did a great job, at the shop Totaal in Kerkrade. It was very special to be together with so many wonderful ladies, all having one goal: to make a small change in the lifes of very sick children.
The pictures below give you an impression of this day. The photo's were taken from Jos' blog. I hope she doesn't mind.

Gisteren zijn 20 quiltsters bij elkaar gekomen om voor Jopie's Dromenquilts te werken. De dag werd door Marie-Jozé georganiseerd. Ze heeft het geweldig gedaan! We mochten gebruik maken van de ruimte van Naaimachine Totaal in Kerkrade. Het was heel speciaal om met zo een fijne groep dames voor hetzelfde doel te werken!
De foto's heb ik van Jos' blog genomen. Ik was zelf natuurlijk weer mijn camera vergeten.

This week 7 more blocks arrived from 4 ladies. Normally Australia takes ages, whereas this time the envelope was delivered within a week. For blocks from England I am now waiting for more than a week. I don't really understand it.

Below are the blocks for the 'boy's quilt'. The block to the left is from Dolores and the other two are from Melanie.

Deze week zijn weer blokken voor de Dromenquilts van vier buitenlandse quiltsters aangekomen. Normaal gesproken doet Australië er heel lang over. Dit keer waren ze binnen een week hier. Andere uit Engeland zijn al meer dan een week onderweg. Ik begrijp er niets van.

Onder zijn de blokken voor de 'jongens quilt'. De meest linkse blok is van Dolores en de andere twee van Melanie.

The blocks for the 'girl's quilt' are from Gudrun (top two) and Lyn (bottom two). All the blocks have been made with so much care! I can't wait to receive the other blocks, so I can make a quilt. I know the blocks are on there way, so I hope I will be able to show them to you next week!

De blokken voor 'meisjes quilt' komen van Gudrun (bovenste twee) en Lyn (onderste twee). Ze zijn allemaal met zo veel zorg gemaakt. Ik kan niet wachten tot dat de andere blokken binnen zijn, zodat ik er een quilt van kan maken.

Together with Melanie I am making a tablerunner for each season. This one is for Christmas. Melanie had hers finished a long time ago, but I didn't finish mine till last week. The small quilt is made from the leftovers of the flying geese. It is from a tutorial from Alda. She has great tutorials in English and German.

Dear Melanie gave me the table topper she made with the leftovers from her flying geese. I don't have a picture of it, since it is at my parents. We are taking turns with having the gorgeous little quilt. I hope to be able to show you a picture soon!

Samen met Melanie maak ik ieder seizoen een tablerunner. Deze is voor de kerst. Melanie had die van haar al lang af, maar mij is het de afgelopen week pas gelukt. De kleine quilt die over de stoelleuning hangt is van de resten van de flying geese gemaakt. De tutorial heb ik van Alda's blog. Zij heeft heel duidelijke tutorials in Engels en Duits.

De quilt de Melanie van haar resten heeft gemaakt, heb ik met kerst gekregen. Deze ligt bij mijn ouders. Mijn moeder en ik zullen er om de beurt van genieten (O:

And here are some more of my Christmas blessings I received. Below you can see the lovely pincushion and potholder Stephanie made for me. Stephanie knows I love Nancy Wolff's designs, so she made me the potholder with fabrics from Nancy Wolff. The colors and designs are so pretty! Thank you so much, dear Stephanie, for this special present. The potholder is hanging in my sewing room to look at (O: I don't dare to use it...

And next to Stephanie's presents are the fabrics and thread Vikki send me. The fabrics are by Rosalie Quinlan. I have been looking at them so often and now I finally have them in my home.

So sweet of you to think of me in these wonderful colors, dear Vikki. Heel erg bedankt!

En hier zijn nog enkele cadeau's die ik met kerst heb gekregen. De schattige pincushion en pannenlap heb ik van Stephanie gekregen. Stephanie weet dat ik een fan ben van Nancy Wolff. Stofjes van haar heeft ze dan ook in de pannenlap gebruikt. Heel erg bedankt, lieve Stephanie!

En daarnaast ligt het cadeautje dat ik van Vikki heb gekregen. Ik heb al langer met een schuin oog naar de stofjes van Rosalie Quinlan gekeken. En nu heb ik ze dan eindelijk in huis. Bedankt lieve Vikki, dat je met deze mooie stofjes aan mij denkt!

Below you can see two presents that go together perfectly. The cute little bag was made by Monika. She also gave me a lovely charm pack, from which I made Schnibbles tuffets together with some yummy chocolate! Monika does some very fine work. In the little bag I now have a lovely necklace to stay safe there! Vielen vielen Dank, liebe Monika, für die wunderschönen Geschenke!!!

Louise (no blog) gave me the lovely little star. It is made from fabrics from a 100 year old quilt. It is very very pretty and special! She also gave me a Mary Engelbreit day calendar. I am so in love with it! Thank you dear Louise!

Hieronder zijn twee cadeaus die toevallig heel mooi bij elkaar passen. Het tasje heb ik van Monika gekregen, samen met de charm pack waar ik Schnibbles tuffets van gemaakt heb, heerlijk chocolade en een schattige vijl met gekleurde spoeltjes. Het tasje is erg mooi gemaakt. Heel secuur! In het tasje bewaar in nu mijn lange parelketting. Heel geschikt!

Vielen vielen Dank, liebe Monika, für die wunderschönen Geschenke!!!

De ster heb ik van Louise gekregen (geen blog). Die is gemaakt met stof van een 100 jaar oude quilt. Hij is werkelijk heel mooi en bijzonder! Bedankt lieve Louise. Van Louise kreeg ik ook een Mary Engelbreit dagkalender. Heerlijk, om iedere dag een mooie tekening en spreuk te mogen bekijken!

Charity blocks for Dromenquilts and more/Blokken voor Dromenquilts en meer

Most of the quilters who have volunteered to help me with the charity quilts for Dromenquilts have received the fabrics and returned them completed very quickly. Unfortunately, the post is not very quick once again, as some blocks have been sent quite a while ago, but have still not arrived and some people from Australia and New Zealand have not received anything yet.
No stress. I will see what I get and if not by Saturday, then I will make the charity quilts later. They will become very special!
Below you can see the blocks I received so far, made by Satu (above) and Stephanie (below). That is why I did not send all the fabrics to a block, so that they would all have something special (O:

De meeste dames die mij wilden helpen bij het maken van Dromenquilts, hebben hun stofjes ontvangen, snel gemaakt en daarna verstuurd. Helaas doet de post niet zo zijn best. Sommige blokken uit Europa zijn al meer dan een week onderweg en sommige dames hebben de stofjes nog niet ontvangen (Australië en Nieuw Zeeland).
Ik ga me er echter niet druk om maken. Ik zie wel wat er komt en wat niet. Dan maak ik de quilts gewoon later voor Dromenquilts.
Hieronder kun je de blokken zien die ik tot nu toe ontvangen heb van Satu (boven) en Stephanie (onder). Daarom heb ik ook niet alle stofjes voor een blok verstuurd, zodat ze allemaal anders zouden worden en speciaal op hun eigen manier (O:

Today Ger and I finally visited our former neighbours in their new home after more than a year. This is what I made for their home. My friend collects angels, so she was very happy with it (O: It is designed by Jacqueline from The Logcabin. And talking about Jacqueline - Sue Daley will be visiting her shop on Friday, January 29 and Saturday, January 30. I am really looking forward to that!

Vandaag hebben Ger en ik na een jaar eindelijk onze vroegere buren in hun nieuwe woning bezocht. Dit heb ik voor haar gemaakt, omdat ik weet dat ze van engeltjes houdt. Jacqueline van The Logcabin heeft het ontworpen. Over Jacqueline gesproken - Sue Daley zal haar quiltzaak op vrijdag 29 en zaterdag 30 januari bezoeken!

Hier enkele cadeaus die ik met de post van blogging vriendinnen heb gekregen. Suzie heeft dat schattige kerstkussentje gemaakt en dat mooie hartje, dat boven in onze kerstboom gepronkt heeft. De heerlijke figgy pudding speldenkussen heeft Mai voor mij gemaakt en de enige schaatsen zijn van Jutta ( die ook voor mij het kruissteekquiltje heeft gemaakt).

Ready for the challenge quilt and Christmas spirit

In a previous post I mentioned that in January 2010 Marie-Jozé at Handmade by Mai will be organizing a day to make charity quilts for children with a severe or chronical illness. I asked ladies from abroad and of course the Netherlands to help me make blocks for the quilts. Eleven wonderful ladies from the UK, Finland, Iceland, Australia, the USA, Canada and New Zealand said they would love to be part of this project! Thank you so much!!!

I asked two webshops if they were willing to donate fabrics and Kathy Mack at Pink Chalk Fabrics was so very kind to donate fabric for at least two tops and the backing for two, one for a girl (red) and one for a boy (yes, blue). Please go visit her webshop! She has wonderful fabrics (O:

If you look closely, you can see that she used gold thread to her silk thread for the words. And she made the birds identical. Lovely work, Satu! Thank you very much, my dear friend! This means a lot to me!
BTW the chocolate was very good too, Satu (((O: We all loved it. And it was my first post from Finland!


And another parcel arrived my way from Melanie. A bag, lovely kitchen towel and playing cards from The Lake District, which is about an hour away from where she lives. I so much enjoy looking at these images. It gives me the feeling as though I am there!
The cards are very special too! It gives you such a good impression of the district. I have similar cards to discover California. I think I might start to collect them. A nice way to discover cities, states and countries.
Melanie added another present, which is also for my mother. So I haven't opened that one yet. I was going to go to my parents today, but due to the snow and the bad road conditions, we decided to stay home.
Thank you so much, sweet Melanie, for the lovely presents and my mother was very happy and suprised to hear that you thought of her!

I didn't make this stitchery quilt this year, but I wanted to show it again. It is so nice to be able to look at it again during these wonderful days, so I wanted to share it with you.

I have been working on my sampler blocks, but I am too lazy to go upstairs to make a picture. It is too cold there now. So I'll share those with you next time.

Schnibbles - Picnic, Sharp Points, Giveaways and Charity Quilts

I finally finished my Schnibbles Picnic by Miss Rosie's Quilt. A wonderful quilt, which turned out very pretty! This picture was taken with artificial light and does not do the colors justice.

For this quilt I used the range "Have a Sheri Berry Holiday", by Sheri Berry Designs. Wonderful and happy fabrics to work with! If you click on the picture, you will see that the inner borders have the text of two Christmas songs: Have yourself a merry little Christmas and Jingle Bells. I really enjoyed doing that. And for the corners I used bells, for which I had to cut the fabric very uneconomically, because most bells were way too large.
The outer border is so pretty, with about 20 different fabrics. The charm packs 'only' had 20 different fabrics double.

This quilt really needed a lot of time and attention, but I think in the end it turned out very pretty (O:

Yesterday I took classes in "De scherpe puntjes" - the sharp points, given by Jacqueline de Jonge. She is the designer of Becolourful, which some of you might know. Jacqueline also teaches in the USA several times a year. She is a wonderful person, very skilled and calm. She has a very pleasant way of teaching.

This was my result. I must say, it was quite difficult, because we were not only taught to make sharp points in a circle, but also to sew a circle within in circle. Jacqueline also showed us how to
use fabric economically. That was the part where I made most of my mistakes. So at the end I decided to do it 'wastefully' which is not really like me, but if you have to undo your work several times like me, you decide for it.

Now, I have finally found the perfect gloves. At the quilting bee I asked some ladies where you can get gloves for 'easy quilting'. At a regular house and garden shop. How difficult can it be *LOL* I have made my machine quilting quite difficult without them, but then it is even more fun to have them now!

And last, but definitely not least, I want to ask your attention for the following. In the Netherlands quilters make charity quilts for children with a severe or chronical illness. Stichting Jopie's Dromenquilts collects these quilts and wants every child who needs one to receive one.

In January 2010 Marie-Jozé at Handmade by Mai will be organizing a day at Naaimachine Totaal in Kerkrade to make charity quilts. I made one in May as you can see here. I was thinking that it would be very special to receive several blocks from abroad, so I can finish a quilt from it. Of course blocks from the Netherlands are more than welcome too!!!

Finally done (O:

Last week I finally finished my droomdekentje (charity quilt). I had had the top finished for quite a while, but somehow didn't feel like getting those layers together and machine quilt it (sound familiar?) I must say, it went quite fast and I even enjoyed the machine quilting. I quilted it in diagonal lines.



Then I want to have my stitchery BOMs finished before the end of the month. Gail Pan's was so much fun to make again! And I changed the Verandah View block a bit.

I also finished mini block 5 of Leanne's House and will put the whole block together today. So Jutta, off to block 2 (O: It is so much more fun to do this together with Jutta, giving each other advise and just knowing that someone is making it together with you, really wants you to work on it. Go over to Jutta's blog and see how she finished her block 5. Then you can also see what she did with her gorgeous strawberry cross stitch!

I would like to share some flowers that are at their best at the moment with the beautiful weather we have.

This plant blooms only once in two years, I think, because last year it only showed its leaves.

And this is definitely my favorite flower! It has never had so many rose buds. My neighbors are very lucky too, because many of the roses grow their way (O:
