Zakka Project 17

This is the 17th Zakka Project, the Delightful Linen bag. I changed the pattern here and there, as I have done with most of the patterns from the book.
The stitchery is taken from a card Gaby once made for me and the beautiful bag fabric is from my dear friend Jutta. The purple fabric is Essex. I have only used Essex for the linen in the Zakka projects. Perfect!

 Detail

The buttons and rings were taken from a bracelet I saw when I went shopping with one of my sisters in Den Bosch. My sister was very surprised that I could see something in this bracelet to be used.

 Texts we came across.
Gedichten, die we tegenkwamen.

In the heart of a seedling
deep under the ground
Rests a tiny plant
Sleeping till tomorrow comes
Wake up - said the sun
And open to the light.
Wake up - said the rain
And show your side.
The tiny plant heard this
And grew up tall to see
How beautiful the world ... might be

Zakka Project 16 - Patchwork Ribbon

Once again, I did not really feel like making one of the zakka projects, this time the patchwork ribbon. When will I ever use a patchwork ribbon? But then I read this post on The Patchsmith and this one by Linda. They both had trouble with the pattern in the book, but had very good tips.

.
I was going to make mine like Linda's, but then I came across this picture (source) and all of a sudden I knew what I wanted.

So, I cut the fabric strips with 1" width and some very thin fusible interfacing used for appliqué, also 1".

I placed the strips on the interfacing with each stip overlapping the next one by 1/4" (sorry, no picture) and then ironing over them, so that they would stick.

I pealed off some of the interfacing paper from one end of each strip, after figuring out how I wanted to place them", cut off 1/4" and then put it over the end of the following strip, ironing them together,

 like this ...
zo ...

... to get one long ribbon.
... om een lang lint te krijgen.

Next I cut 2 cotton strips 1 1/2" WOF for the backing (you might want to use linen for this). Step by step I pealed off the paper...

... and ironed on the patchwork strip to the back, wrong sides together.
... en de patchwork strip of the achterkant gestreken, verkeerde kanten samen.

I sewed close along the edges and cut the ribbon to 1". This took some time, but that didn't matter, since I liked the result.

I stamped some meaningful words to me on the linen, rolled the ribbon around an old bobbin - that had been waiting for this project a long time - and there, again I am happy with the result of my zakka project.

It is so much fun, to discover that a project that I didn't want to make, turns out into something I really like, by being inspired by others and by a picture, that I came across by accident. I will not use the ribbon for a present, but unwind it once in a while and enjoy it.
